The Mohs Micrographic Surgery involves a repeated series of surgical excisions of the skin cancer tumor followed by microscopic examination of the tissue to assess if any tumor cells remain.
The Mohs technique allows surgeons to precisely identify and remove the entire tumor layer-by-layer in order to leave the surrounding healthy tissue intact and unharmed.
As the most exact and precise method of tumor removal, a Mohs surgery minimizes the chance of re-growth and lessens the potential for scarring or disfigurement.
Since the physician performs Mohs Micrographic Surgery using local anesthesia in the comfort of the Paradise Dermatology office, there is minimal preparation before surgery, unlike surgeries that require general anesthesia.
Local anesthesia is used to completely numb the area around the skin cancer for the procedure.
After numbing, the visible tumor is removed and a thin layer of tissue around the tumor is excised. The physician examines the tissue to determine whether skin cancer cells are present beyond the tumor.
If additional cancer cells are present, this process is continued layer-by-layer until the cancer is completely removed.
After the cancer removal, the physician will discuss reconstruction options, which are individualized for each patient.
Since only local anesthesia is used, patients are able to drive home, but are encouraged to rest. The length of rest will be determined by the surgical location.
