Electrodessication & Curettage

About

Electrodessication & Curettage

The electrodessication and curettage procedure is used for removal of a range of skin growths. Both cancerous and benign growths can be removed using ED&C, as well as some superficial forms of skin cancer.

What is it?

In an ED&C procedure, a variety of skin growths are removed by scraping the site away from the skin and then cauterizing the area.

What is the service like?

What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery

Before

Before an ED&C procedure, the site is sterilized and anesthetized for the patient’s comfort.

During

Your provider will use an instrument to scrape the skin growth until healthy skin is uncovered.

After the growth has been removed, the cauterization can begin. In this stage, small amounts of electricity are applied to the skin to essentially burn away any remaining cells.

After

Stitches are not needed with ED&C. Instead, the area will simply be bandaged. Healing time varies depending on where the ED&C occurred.

Keep the site clean with gentle soap and warm water, and take acetaminophen or ibuprofen as directed.
